AS&D industry background

The aerospace, space and defense (AS&D) industry has hundreds of thousands of suppliers and millions of practitioners, ensuring product safety and reliability through meticulous collaboration. From design and manufacturing to maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and from raw materials to parts distribution, a small error at any link can trigger cascading risk. The International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) drives the industry by developing the AS9100 series, promoting risk management and global supply-chain collaboration to build a full-life-cycle quality defense.

What is the AS9100 series?

The AS9100 series comprises AS9100, AS9110 and AS9120 — quality-management standards for the AS&D industry, built on ISO 9001 with industry-specific requirements such as product safety, risk management, configuration management, counterfeit-part prevention, continued airworthiness and product release.

  • AS9100: for organizations engaged in the design, development, production and post-delivery service of AS&D products.
  • AS9110: for maintenance and continued-airworthiness organizations and OEMs performing MRO.
  • AS9120: for parts distributors, focused on product identification, traceability and counterfeit prevention.

Special-process certification (PRI / NADCAP)

The Performance Review Institute (PRI) is a non-profit that runs quality-certification programs, the most notable being NADCAP (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program), which focuses on quality assurance for special processes (heat treatment, chemical processing, non-destructive testing, welding, coating, etc.). NADCAP uses standardized audits to ensure suppliers' processes meet high, consistent requirements.

Evolution to IA9100

The 9100 series has evolved since the 1990s. A new revision, IA9100, is planned for 2026 in alignment with the ISO 9001:2026 revision, adding requirements around quality culture, ethics, information security and data protection, product safety, counterfeit-part prevention, sub-tier supplier control and APQP. ISO 9001's new edition is expected in the second half of 2026, with IA9100 rolling out from 2026 (the full edition possibly extending into 2027).
